Fighting with April has become a common activity in May Moretti"s life.
Before everything happened, May used to look up to her big sister. April was her rock, her role-model, her shining beacon of light.
But after an unfortunate incident occured when May was 14 and April was 17, things between the sisters were never the same. The light in April died. The dance to her step, the glow to her eyes, the rhythm to her voice faded into the nothingness, leaving a shell of her big sister behind.
And just as she thinks her life has finally reached a new normal, the beginning of her sixteenth year of life throws a new set of obstacles at May that she may not be prepared for.
April moves out of home, initiating a path of worry for her. Her best friend and secret crush, Evie, starts dating someone, choosing to neglect May in favour of her new boyfriend. Then finally Rowan, a boy whose art she has always admired, confesses he has feelings for her.
With April gone and Evie drifting from her, will Rowan"s honey-blonde hair and glowing green eyes be enough to rouse a new realisation from May regarding her sexuality? Can he fill that hole the two girls left in her life? Or would she just be using him out of loneliness?
Fighting for April is a coming-of-age story that dives between the past and present, tackling themes surrounding love, friendship, sisterhood, and how the small decisions we make can drastically shape the lives of others.
